Our Community. Our Kids. At a recent picnic celebrating our foster and adoptive families and their chil-dren, an 11-year-old volunteer asked “Which are the kids in foster care? I can’t tell the difference.” All she saw were dozens of kids having fun at the park. It’s a reminder that kids…are just kids. Not “foster kids”. Not “adopted kids”. Kids. And it’s our responsibility to ensure the children we care for have every chance to be happy, healthy and become successful individuals. “Strengthening Lives, Families and Communities through our Cornerstone Val-ues” is our mission. Our continuum of services has successfully helped children and families recover, rehabilitate and reintegrate to live happier and healthier lives. One of only three foster care agencies in the state accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), Kindred Family Focus represents the highest quality of care standards in the field. We are also the largest private, nonprofit foster care and adoption provider in Minnesota with a strong reputation for providing highly effective services to children and youth throughout the state, espe-cially those experiencing significant trauma and mental health, behavior and emotional challenges. In other words, we’re making a difference! 2016 marked a significant year as we addressed the “perfect storm” of events challenging the foster care system. Counties throughout Minnesota and the state itself dramatically increased the focus and resourc-es dedicated to child protection services, a critical step in protecting children from abuse and SAFETY PERMANENCY WELL-BEING neglect. A surge in the number of children referred for foster care is now emerging while the number of foster families dwindles. These children often struggle with significant mental health concerns as a result of trauma they have experienced. It’s becoming difficult if not impossible to find appro-priate foster homes. In many instances, children are sleeping in county offices or shelters when they really need a home. Kindred Family Focus has launched three efforts to address this crisis: • Hired dedicated recruiters to find new foster families in critical need areas • Kicked off statewide fundraising to support Kindred CARES – a fund to retain and support foster parents and the children in their care • Furthered development of Children’s Therapeutic Services and Supports, outpatient therapy and crisis nursery services to support children and their biological, adoptive and foster families THANK YOU for your generous contributions that have helped support these efforts. We need you by our side to build stronger youth and families that benefit our entire community. When we impact one life, it changes the arc of many lives to follow. Changing One Life Changes Everything! With gratitude, 1 George Hendrickson
