Vocational Center Tour 19 | NOV/DEC 2018 Vocational Center Opens On a very brisk October morning, the Woodbourne Center officially opened its much-anticipated Vocational Center. Attended by a host of local and state officials, as well as Nexus Executive Leadership and Board members, the Center will expand Woodbourne’s continuum of care to the Baltimore community. The 5,000-square-foot facility will provide carpentry instruction, basic automotive skills, and offer a STEM curriculum. Construction began in March of 2018, under the direction of Whiting Turner, and was designed by Marshall Craft & Associates. Stakeholders across the state fully supported Woodbourne’s mission to expand its ability to offer a full range of educational choices for youth. Executive Director Tony Wilson hosted the historic event. Nexus Board Member Paul Zimmer spoke about the Nexus mission relative to workforce development and how important fundraising efforts played in achieving our goal. Other noted speakers included: • Jim Rzepkowski, Assistant Secretary of Department of Labor, Licensing Executive Director Tony Wilson thanked everyone who helped make this dream a reality. and Regulation, who discussed his department’s commitment to workforce development initiatives and looks forward to following our progress. • Rachel Brash, Youth Strategist from the Mayor’s Youth Opportunity Team, who spoke about the need for more workforce opportunities for youth in the city and collaborating with similar agencies. • Baltimore City Council President, Jack Young, a long-time Woodbourne advocate, who praised Woodbourne for its willingness to provide necessary skills training to Baltimore’s youth. The Woodbourne Vocational Center will offer auto, carpentry, and STEM training and certification. The carpentry workshop was fully stocked with tools for students to begin their training. The automotive bay will allow students to learn vehicle mechanics and maintenance. New classrooms provide space for STEM training at the Woodbourne Vocational Center.
