Director’s Report Hospitals will often work with a concept called “the other person in the room” as a way to remind themselves of the value of their relationships and interactions with people other than the patient. If you have ever been a patient in a hospital or have been there supporting someone else, you can recall how confusing some of the messaging can be. Talking points can become lost or easily misunderstood from the healthcare provider, resulting in frustration about the situation, the service being provided (or not provided), and the speed in which the service is being delivered. Jason Donahue Executive Director To combat this, effective healthcare settings make sure that they clearly communicate about the role of each member of the team, and communicate what actions will be taken in the course of treatment. By using terms that are easily understood, they strive to be a good supporter of the youth and their families in their care. Furthermore, effective healthcare teams talk with the youth and their families to help identify individuals who are best suited to provide support for the youth, as well as who may be best suited to take an active role in the treatment of the youth. Not only do effective healthcare teams practice this with the patient and their support system, they also focus these same efforts on their internal service team, because they, too, are the “other people in the room.” This is a very valuable example to us, as one of our overall goals is to minimize the barriers to care. We can accomplish that by repeatedly asking ourselves, at every interaction with our youth and their families, if the youth is connected to their treatment team and treatment plan. As we continue to examine our processes and systems, these concepts can help keep us focused on making sure that our efforts reinforce the treatment processes of the youth and involvement of their families. We hope to generate similar levels of success in our own teammates, so their jobs help create further ripples of community impact beyond the Academy. After a brief orientation, volunteers washed up and prepared to get busy packaging meals. The meals are called MannaPack Rice, and consist of portions of vitamins, veggies, soy, and rice. Each dry meal is measured and packaged, sealed and boxed, in preparation for shipping across the Atlantic to the West African country of Burkina Faso. Over the MEA Break, each and every MLA program was able to participate in packaging food. In total, the group packed 24,600 meals! One youth said that he “felt happy to help others,” while another noted that it “felt good doing things for other people.” All of the youth who participated should be very proud of themselves for doing their part in helping change lives! MLA Shows its Halloween Spirit At MLA, we have a history of celebrating Halloween in a big way. Over the years, there has never been a shortage of staff and youth who get into the Halloween spirit. This year was no exception, as the decorations and preparations were truly exceptional. MLA sponsored a program decorating contest, door decorating contest, youth costume contests, and candy corn contests. When the big day finally arrived, the kids were not let down. The MLA gym was the hub of the frightful fun and ghoulish games. Of course, copious amounts of candy was handed out. Some of the kid’s favorite games were: • Hands-free Donut on a string • Hands-free Gummy worm search • Obstacle course
