Be Their Hero-Help Prevent Child Abuse

THE DIFFERENCE FOR A CHILD There are many ways you can make a difference in the life of a child. The following strategies for child abuse and neglect prevention are summarized from a list provided by the Child Welfare Information Gateway.10 Be a Good Neighbor Problems can seem more manageable when you have someone to talk to. Parenting is challenging work. Help reduce the stress of a flustered parent. Offer to babysit, help with chores and errands, or suggest resources in the community that can help. Refer a family to a local crisis nursery, if available. Smile and Talk to the Kids in Your Neighborhood Children are more likely to confide in a friend about problems at home. Offer an ear. If a child confides abuse or neglect to you, do your best to remain calm. Do not interrogate the child. Instead, reassure him or her that it is not their fault. Invest in Your Community Donate to or volunteer at local schools, community or faith-based organizations, children’s hospitals, social service agencies, or other places where families and children are supported. Organizations like Kindred Family Focus rely on donations to support their work. Be a Foster Parent Minnesota is in need of foster homes for kids who cannot safely stay at home. You can provide a safe, stable home for children and adolescents when they need help most. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent, contact Kindred Family Focus at 612-331-4429. Kindred Family Focus is one of the largest private, nonprofit foster care and adoption agencies in the state, with a statewide referral network. There are children awaiting immediate placement. Adopt a Child or Adolescent There are currently approximately 500 Minnesota youth awaiting a permanent home. Adolescents, ages 12 and older, represent approximately 45 percent of the children in foster care.11 Open your heart. Open your home.
